Kaufmo

Kaufmo the Clown, initially a human performer trapped in Glitch Productions’ The Amazing Digital Circus, played a significant role in the pilot episode. Known for his physical and mental abstraction, Kaufmo is confined to the basement of the circus.

Appearance

Kaufmo’s clown appearance is distinct and memorable. He wears a yellow party hat with a blue rim and red top, a yellow long-sleeved shirt adorned with big red buttons, and a sky-blue collar. His white gloves complement his pale skin, while his small oval black eyes are marked with black triangular shapes resembling eyebrows. When abstracted, Kaufmo transforms into a black body with numerous pink and blue eyes.

Before his abstraction, Kaufmo was known for his love of telling jokes. However, he would become upset when his humor failed to amuse others. His descent into madness was marked by his obsession with finding an exit, leading to incoherent mutterings and ultimately his transformation into an abstracted state.

Relationships

  • Ragatha: Kaufmo had a strained relationship with Ragatha, as she never genuinely laughed at his jokes. She tried to help him when he became abstracted.
  • Jax: Like other characters tormented by Jax, Kaufmo was often ridiculed by him. Jax seemed indifferent to Kaufmo’s wellbeing, especially when Kaufmo was abstracted.
  • Gangle: Gangle appeared indifferent to Kaufmo. She was shocked to see him abstracted but, like others, did not find his jokes funny, possibly straining their relationship.

Story in the Pilot

Kaufmo did not appear in the introduction of the pilot, leading Pomni, Jax, and Ragatha to visit him. It is revealed that Kaufmo secluded himself in his room, driven mad by his inability to find an exit, leading to a rampage. He attacks Ragatha and pursues Pomni throughout the circus. His focus shifts to attacking other AI creatures, ultimately confronting the Gloink Queen. After learning about Kaufmo’s abstraction, Caine confines him to the basement.

Interesting Facts

  • Kaufmo’s design was finalized only 48 hours before the pilot’s release. He was absent from the “MEET THE GANG” promo despite being part of the main cast before Pomni’s arrival.
  • His cardboard depiction might be a reference to Marty from the SMG4 series.
  • In the first teaser, Kaufmo’s abstracted form is visible in the background as Caine searches for a suitable background.
  • Initially planned as a main character, Kaufmo was cut due to the large number of characters, leading to his abstraction.
  • According to GlitchX, Kaufmo’s 3D render has no lower body, and the circus background is just a printed two-dimensional picture.
  • Gooseworx suggests that Pomni would have been annoyed by Kaufmo’s jokes, questioning their appropriateness in their situation.
  • Michael Kovach commented that Kaufmo would have been a joyous, optimistic clown, exuding toxic positivity.
  • Kaufmo’s lines were rejected for being too offensive.
